Back in 1999 an internet startup named Treeloot was looking for a way to drive traffic to their site. In a stroke of marketing genius (or perhaps pure evil) they decided to run a java-based banner ad featuring a frenzied monkey and a user-guided boxing glove. Their ad simply stated, “PUNCH THE MONKEY AND WIN $20!”
This single ad spawned an ongoing legacy as the other dotcoms of the era and their black-hearted marketing firms followed suit in a vain attempt to recapture the monkey’s success. To this day it remains a popular form of internet advertising.
