The Sucker Punch Saloon

Back in 1999 an internet startup named Treeloot was looking for a way to drive traffic to their site. In a stroke of marketing genius (or perhaps pure evil) they decided to run a java-based banner ad featuring a frenzied monkey and a user-guided boxing glove. Their ad simply stated, “PUNCH THE MONKEY AND WIN $20!”

This single ad spawned an ongoing legacy as the other dotcoms of the era and their black-hearted marketing firms followed suit in a vain attempt to recapture the monkey’s success. To this day it remains a popular form of internet advertising.

Couldn’t this all have been avoided? What does it say about human nature that so many of us couldn’t resist smashing that bastard little monkey in the face? Here at the Sucker Punch Saloon you can safely explore the bizarre world of these simplistic micro-games and draw your own conclusions!
