It’s designed to have minimal jaggies for just just about any background color you can throw it on. It’s also stylish, high clarity, and so damn small that it can go just about anywhere without messing with the height of your lines. Don’t ya just hate that?

Like most people, I’m not a huge fan of square emoticons. Round ones are just plain nicer. But usually there is a method to my madness, and the squarishness of this set is no exception. Folks, jaggies are the enemy. By using rectangles with small corners, a clever designer can create the illusion of some semblance of roundedness while nearly eliminating the jagged appearance that such transparent GIFs created for a range of backgrounds must normally suffer. See how I just complimented myself? I freekin’ rule!

I created these 22 neat little graphics because Microsoft pissed me off. You’d be suprised how often things get done in this world for exactly this reason.

Ya see, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser doesn’t properly support the PNG graphics format. At least, it didn’t until the recent release of IE7 beta 1. The part they left out is a wondeful little thing called alpha transparency. Without this, it’s kinda hard to design versatile images (such as emoticon sets) that look good no matter where they appear. In creating this special little smilies set, I think I’ve done my part in the war against jaggies and managed to give something back to the WordPress community in the process.
